I believe these machines can play a vital role in assisting the teaching and learning mathematics. This ultimately enhances engagement, enjoyment and achievement. Over the past decade there has been a decline in the number of teachers and students using graphic calculators to assist in their post-16 studies. Why is this? 1. Curriculum 2000 had an extremely negative impact. Students were only permitted to use scientific in certain examinations. Although graphics could be used elsewhere, this actually fostered the notion ‘I can get away with only using a scientific calculator.’ All those great learning opportunities that encouraged the use of graphic calculators were discarded. Remember the SMP 16-19 texts that had explicit activities using graphic calculators to compliment the whole learning experience of topics? 2. Technology has moved on. Many teachers have access to extensive computer software; they don’t need to use graphic calculator technology. But what about the students? Do they have the same level of access to dedicated mathematics technology in every lesson? Graphic calculator technology has moved on as well. The latest models have all of the colour graphing, dynamic geometry, statistics and spreadsheet tools that are used on PCs. Shouldn’t we be equipping our students with these portable devices so they can be used in each lesson, at home and in examinations?
