Fordman Systems Ltd
Trial of new Casio IT-800 in clinical environment
Casio Electronics Co Ltd is pleased to announce their partnership with Fordman Systems Ltd, a leading provider of an electronic blood tracking solution into both the NHS and private healthcare sector called BARS – Blood Audit and Release System. The basic premise of BARS is to match the correct blood to the correct patient, highlighting any errors, and creating a full audit trail, accessible to hospital for staff for 30 years and beyond.
Part of the BARS solution is checking blood /patient compatibility at the bedside. Developments in different technology mean Fordman Systems has been able to adapt their bedside module (known as PBARS – Portable BARS) to work with wireless technology and Bluetooth. This software solution can now be offered to healthcare departments on the Casio IT-800 hand-held computer.
The new IT-800 hand-held computer weighs less than 350 grams and is equipped with a 9.4 cm (3.7 inch) VGA colour touch-screen. The new product is also equipped with various functions for retrieving and gathering information in a variety of hospital environments, such as a contactless smart card reader/writer for secure access control to sensitive data, 3G wireless WLAN capability, WLAN and Bluetooth. The IT-800 also has an optional auto focus digital camera and can be used as a mobile phone.
As a result of close co-operation between Casio, West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmonds and Fordman Systems, we are also pleased to announce a trial of the IT-800 in a clinical environment. The IT-800 will use its built-in wireless capability for blood transfusions, and Bluetooth is used to print blood sample labels. This speeds up outpatient appointments, and ensures accuracy on the labels being sent to the laboratory.
Matt Dossett of Fordman Systems comments that “we are very pleased to be working closely with Casio on this trial, and look forward to the feedback. Fordman Systems would like to thank the IT and blood transfusion staff at West Suffolk Hospital for supporting this project”.
Guy Boxall of Casio explains that “Casio has considerable success in supporting many healthcare applications globally, tracking patients, blood products and pharmaceuticals. We now look forward to bringing some very new mobile computer technology to the healthcare sector in the UK”.
